A root canal can save a tooth that would otherwise have to be pulled: it cleans the inside of a tooth whose nerve is inflamed or infected. At Smile & Align, it is done by an endodontic specialist, by appointment. It's almost always finished in one or two visits, under local anesthesia. We are at Torre Médica Azuna, in Cancun's Hotel Zone.

When do you need a root canal?

When the nerve of the tooth (the pulp) has become inflamed beyond recovery or infected. It can only be confirmed with an exam and an X-ray, but these signs are a reason to come in soon:

  • The tooth hurts when you bite or chew.
  • Pain from cold or heat lasts more than a few seconds after the cold or heat is gone.
  • It hurts for no reason, especially at night.
  • The tooth turned gray or dark, sometimes after a knock.
  • A pimple appeared on the gum near the tooth.
  • Your face or the gum around a tooth swelled up.

If your face is swollen, you have a fever or it's hard to open your mouth, don't wait for a regular appointment: message us the same day.

  2. Exam and X-rayWe look at the tooth with a digital X-ray. If it needs a root canal, we explain it and give you the cost before we start.
  3. Anesthesia and cleaningUnder local anesthesia we isolate the tooth, remove the damaged nerve and disinfect the canals.
  4. SealingWe seal the canals and close the tooth. Most people leave without the pain they came in with.
  5. Final restorationAt another visit the tooth is protected. On molars, that's usually a crown.

Does a root canal hurt?

With anesthesia, the treatment feels like a long filling. What hurts is the tooth before it's treated.

For the first few days afterward the tooth may feel sensitive when you bite; the pain reliever the specialist recommends keeps it under control.

We see you on the 8th floor with a view of Nichupté Lagoon. Several patients tell us the view helps them relax in the chair.

“A relaxing view, perfect for anxious people because it gives a rewarding sense of peace and calm.”

Root canal or pulling the tooth?

If the tooth can be saved, a root canal is almost always the better choice.

You keep your own root and you don't have to replace the tooth with an implant or a bridge, which cost more and take more time. Pulling the tooth is the option when it's so broken or so loose that it can't hold a restoration. The specialist tells you which one your case is after seeing it.

After the root canal

The tooth is left without a nerve and becomes more fragile, especially a molar. That's why we recommend protecting it with a crown. Until then, don't bite hard things on that side. You can eat normally once the anesthesia wears off, taking care not to bite your cheek.

Root canal retreatment

If a tooth that already had a root canal hurts again or gets infected, the treatment can sometimes be repeated: the old filling is removed, the canals are cleaned again and sealed once more. It's more complex than the first time and the same specialist does it.
