At Smile & Align, we know a healthy smile starts in childhood. Our team of dentists in Cancun cares for children with check-ups every 6 months, dental cleanings, fluoride, sealants and treatment of cavities in baby teeth, based on what each child needs. The best time for the first visit is when the first tooth comes in, or before your child turns one. Early orthodontics and Invisalign First are led by Dr. Lorenny Tinjacá, orthodontist and clinical director.

When should you bring them?

The best time is before anything hurts. If you notice any of these, message us:

  • Their first tooth has come in, or they turned one, and they haven't been to the dentist yet.
  • They have white or brown spots on their teeth.
  • They complain when they eat something sweet or cold.
  • They still use a pacifier or suck their thumb after age 3.
  • Their new teeth are coming in crowded or out of place.
  • They are already 7 and nobody has checked their bite.

Let them arrive relaxed

If the first visit goes well, your child will come back without fear. That's why we go at their pace.

We show them the chair, the little mirror and the light before we use them, and we explain everything in words they understand. If something scares them, we slow down. And you can come into the exam room with them.

At home, tell them we are going to count their teeth. Avoid phrases like "it won't hurt," because they put the idea of pain in their head. And from the 8th floor you can see the lagoon: while they wait, they have something to look at.

What we do for their teeth

Check-up and cleaning

We check teeth, gums and bite, remove plaque and show you how to brush for their age. We recommend coming back every 6 months.

Sealants

A thin coating that covers the grooves of the molars, where the brush can't reach and almost every cavity starts. No needle or drill is used.

Fluoride

A varnish painted on the teeth in a few minutes that makes the enamel more resistant. It's included in the cleaning.

Cavities in baby teeth

If there's already a cavity, we treat it even if the tooth is going to fall out: with a filling, a pulpotomy or a children's crown, depending on the case. A healthy baby tooth holds the place for the permanent one, and if it's lost too early, a space maintainer does that job.

How the first visit works, step by step

  1. You message usOn WhatsApp. Tell us your child's age and whether anything worries you.
  2. They get to know the officeBefore we start, we show them the chair, the light and the instruments.
  3. ExamWe count their teeth, check gums and bite, and tell you what we see as we go.
  4. Cleaning, if they let usIf they are comfortable, we do the cleaning. If not, we leave it for the next visit.
  5. Plan for homeWe tell you what to do at home, when to come back and, if needed, the treatment with its cost in writing.

Early orthodontics and Invisalign First

Some bite problems are corrected better while the child is still growing. This is called early orthodontics.

The first orthodontic check-up is recommended around age 7. At that age you can already see whether the jaws are growing evenly, whether there isn't enough room for the new teeth or whether the bite is crossed. Often it's enough to keep an eye on it. If something has to be done, it happens in a short phase, and treatment in the teen years is usually simpler.

Invisalign First is a set of clear aligners for children roughly 6 to 10 years old who still have baby teeth. They come out to eat and to brush, so there are no brackets that come loose and no forbidden foods. For them to work, your child has to wear them almost all day, and that's where you come in to help. More details on the Invisalign page.

This stage is led by Dr. Lorenny Tinjacá, orthodontist, clinical director and Invisalign Top Doctor in Mexico three years running.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

When the first tooth comes in, or before they turn one. That first visit is short: we check how the teeth are coming in and show you how to clean them.

Who treats my child?

Our team of dentists, who have experience caring for children: check-ups, cleanings, prevention and cavities in baby teeth. If the bite needs a closer look, or early orthodontics or Invisalign First comes up, care is led by Dr. Lorenny Tinjacá, orthodontist and clinical director.

How often should they go to the dentist?

Every 6 months, for a check-up and cleaning. That way a cavity is found while it's still small and easy to treat.

My child is afraid of the dentist. What do I do?

At home, talk about the visit without saying "it won't hurt." Here we go at their pace: we show them everything before we use it, and if something scares them, we slow down.

Can I go into the exam room with my child?

Yes, you can go in with them. With the little ones, having you close helps them stay calm.

Do cavities in baby teeth need treatment if the teeth are going to fall out anyway?

Yes. A cavity left untreated hurts, can get infected and can reach the permanent tooth underneath. And if the baby tooth is lost too early, the teeth next to it drift over and the permanent one can come in crooked.

What is a space maintainer?

A small appliance that holds the place of a baby tooth lost too early, so the permanent tooth has room to come in. We make it here at the clinic.

When should they give up the pacifier or thumb-sucking?

The recommendation is to stop around age 3. If it goes on longer, it can open the bite or push the front teeth forward. At the check-up we see whether it has already had an effect, and we give you ideas for stopping without a fight.

What are dental sealants?

A thin coating placed in the grooves of the molars so food doesn't build up and a cavity doesn't start. They go on without anesthesia and in a single visit.

At what age do children get braces?

The first orthodontic check-up is recommended around age 7. That doesn't mean they need appliances at that age: Dr. Lorenny checks how their bite is growing and tells you whether it makes sense to correct something now or wait.

What is Invisalign First?

Clear aligners for children who still have baby teeth, roughly ages 6 to 10. They come out to eat and brush. Dr. Lorenny Tinjacá, an orthodontist, plans and follows them. More information on the Invisalign page.

How much does it cost to take my child to the dentist?

The cleaning costs MXN 1,000 and already includes the fluoride application. If they need something more, such as sealants, treating cavities or orthodontics, the cost depends on the case and we give it to you in writing before we start. The first visit has a cost. You can pay in up to 12 interest-free monthly payments with all banks, or with financing.
