Model of a dental implant between two teeth, with the titanium root in view

A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the bone to replace the root of a missing tooth; a crown goes on top. At Smile & Align, implants are planned and placed by an implant specialist, by appointment, so you can eat and smile again with a fixed tooth. The whole process usually takes three to six months, because the bone needs time to bond with the implant.

Who are implants for?

For anyone who has lost one or more teeth and wants something fixed that feels and works like a natural tooth.

  • You are missing a tooth and don't want to file down the ones next to it for a bridge.
  • You are about to lose a tooth that can no longer be saved.
  • You wear a partial denture or a bridge and want something fixed.
  • Your dentures move around or hurt.
  • You are missing several teeth on the same side.
  • You have trouble chewing, or you avoid smiling because of the gaps.

Options depending on how many teeth are missing

One tooth

One implant with its crown. It doesn't touch the neighboring teeth.

Several teeth

A fixed bridge supported by two or more implants, without placing one for every tooth.

A full arch

A complete fixed or removable prosthesis on implants, such as All-on-4.

How treatment works, step by step

  1. You message usTell us how many teeth you are missing and for how long.
  2. Consultation with imagingAn exam and an X-ray; if needed, a CT scan at an outside radiology center.
  3. Plan and cost, in writingHow many implants, which prosthesis and how long it will take, before you start.
  4. PlacementWe place the implant in the bone under local anesthesia. If you prefer, it can be done with sedation, handled by an anesthesiologist.
  5. HealingThree to six months for the bone to bond with the implant. In the meantime, you can wear a temporary tooth.
  6. Final crownWe attach the crown or prosthesis and adjust your bite.

Implant or bridge?

If the neighboring teeth are healthy, an implant is usually the better option: they don't have to be filed down, and it protects the bone where the tooth used to be.

A bridge may make sense when the teeth next to the gap already need crowns, or when an implant can't be placed. At the consultation we explain both options with your X-ray in front of us.

What if I don't have enough bone?

When a tooth is lost, the bone shrinks over time. In many cases it can be rebuilt with a bone graft before or during implant placement. We look at it in the imaging.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental implant cost in Cancun?

It depends on how many implants you need, whether you need a bone graft and the type of crown or prosthesis. At the consultation we give you the exact cost, in writing, before you start. The consultation costs MXN 1,000. You can pay in up to 12 interest-free monthly payments with all banks, or with financing.

Does getting an implant hurt?

Not during placement, because it's done with local anesthesia. In the following days there may be some discomfort and swelling, which are managed with the medication the specialist prescribes.

How long does treatment take?

The most common is three to six months between placing the implant and the final crown, because the bone needs that time to bond with the implant. If a graft is needed, it can take longer.

How long does an implant last?

With good care, an implant can last many years, even a lifetime. The crown on top may need to be replaced over time.

What are the downsides of implants?

They require minor surgery, take several months and cost more than a removable prosthesis. They also need to be cared for like a natural tooth: if the gum around the implant gets inflamed, the implant can be lost.

Can I get implants if I smoke or have diabetes?

Often yes, but the risk that the implant doesn't integrate is higher. The specialist assesses it with you before deciding.

What if I don't have enough bone?

In many cases a bone graft can restore the volume that's missing. We look at it on the X-ray or CT scan.

I'm coming from outside Cancun. Can I still do it?

Yes. Treatment is organized in stages, and we tell you how many visits you need and how much time passes between them. Our doctors see patients in English.
